Portable External Hard Drives

Portable External Hard DrivesWhether it is for backing up important data from your computer, keeping an extensive music collection, your most cherished digital photos or as additional storage, portable external hard drives are the way to go.

There are obviously certain factors to consider when purchasing portable external hard drives such as compatibility, actual size of the device and storage space.  With the ever changing advances in technology portable external hard drives have become extremely easy to use and most top manufacturing brands have such compact versions that they are small and light enough to fit in a pocket or hand bag ( I mean who wants to walk around with a small box in their hand right). Most only require you to know how to plug a USB into your computer as portable external hard drives comes plug and play compatible, meaning there is software already on the hard drive that makes it readily available for use as soon as you plug it in.

Some people argue the fact that since Flash Drives now have increased capacity of storage volume and practically weightless to carry around it makes the portable external hard drives look like an obsolete technology. But in my humble opinion, when it comes to a longer lifespan, a much higher capacity for storage and a price that works on an average of less than $1 USD per Gigabyte, it most certainly seems best to choose portable external hard drives over flash drives, as I think you get more “BANG for the BUCK”.

Another important factor worth paying attention to is the RPM (revolutions per minute) of the hard drive. The bigger the number the faster it can read and write data. Most portable external hard drives are 5200 RPM however once again with recent technological advances the industry has been introducing 7200 RPM external hard drives, and even better is that they are becoming quieter as well. Faster and quieter is always a plus.

I want to share with you my opinion on two brands of external hard drives, Seagate portable external hard drive and Western Digital external hard drives as I have used them both and have found them to be quite reliable and not to damaging on the pockets ( Literally and Figuratively), and also a look at Firewire external hard drives and why i think they are pretty handy to have. At the end of the day, no matter your reason for needing the benefits of portable external hard drives, they are without a doubt quickly becoming and integral part of the way we store and carry our data.

Tips For Finding The Best Portable External Hard Drive

There are new demands that come up daily in the information technology industry. The good thing is that the manufacturers of digital accessories understand this challenge. Due to this, a variety of products have been introduced into the market so as to cater for the increasing demand. Hard drives are some of the parts of a computer that are very important. In the early years, many thought that they could effectively operate with a computer with a hard disk capacity of 1GB. But nowadays, even home users can not be satisfied with such capacity. Hard drives with much more storage capacity have been made and the issue now is their portability.

A variety of portable external hard drives have come up in the markets dealing with computer accessories. There are some that have the capacity of up to 100GB. Contents carried may include music, videos, photos, movies and other data files. The greatest advantage of these portable hard drives is that they can be easily carried around. Their weight is also less and they come in different styles and they can be moved from one computer to another.

With portable external hard drive, there is great deal of flexibility. The hard drive does not require power cords or power adaptors. They are “plug-and-play”. This means that you simply plug them in one of your computer’s USB ports using a cable which is normally supplied free once you purchase the drive. The internal hard drives are known to be delicate and sensitive to movements and the surroundings. Most of the Portable external hard drives have been designed in such a way that they are resistant to scuffs and knocks. They have hard chrome aluminum external hard drive enclosure not only to keep it safe from damage as a result of physical impacts, but also to keep it cool.

There are internal hard drives that make noise when they are reading or writing data. The portable external hard disks do not make any noise and their performance is also superior. This will allow you to enjoy your music without having to hear any interruption unlike a notebook hard drive.

Lastly, the most exclusive feature of portable disks is their speed. They are faster compared to many of the internal disks. The reason for this is that the transfer rate of data is very high since they use the USB port. They are also easily compatible with a variety of computers.
